Soap Ingredients

I have several recipes that I think are cold processing. My questions are - do you use borax in hot process? Also the recipes call for glycerin, my understanding was that glycerin was not needed in hot processing. Is this correct? My last question is can you substitute rice bran oil for lanolin? I would really appreciate your help I'm a little lost. Thank you for your time.

ANSWER: Hi Leah. Thank you for your questions.

Answer to Question # 1: You can you use borax in hot or cold process.

Answer to Question # 2: Glycerin is not needed in hot process UNLESS you're making liquid soap, then you add some glycerin.

Answer to Question # 3: NO! You can't substitute rice bran oil for lanolin. Lanolin is a wax. They both offer completely different properties.

I hope I've been of help to you, Leah. If you have other questions, please let me know. I wish you the best in your soap making endeavors!

Best Regards,
Susan :-)
